Spring Equinox

Aries is the first sign of the Astrological calendar, but even on our modern calendars in the northern hemisphere, the first day of spring is determined by the moment the Sun enters Aries. I remember as a kid learning the seasons I was so confused as to why spring started at the end of March. If the spring months were March, April, and May; then why was most of March technically in winter?

Once again, I found my answer in the ancient time-keeping practice of astrology. When the Sun enters Aries, day is equal to night, that’s where the term “equinox” comes from it means “equal night”. It marks a turning point as the days become longer. It signals a shift out of the hibernation of winter, an increasing energy, and a new vibrancy of life.

This year, more than ever there is a sense of reemergence from the isolation of the pandemic. As more and more of us get vaccinated and feel safe to see our loved ones again. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the weather has already begun to turn and the sunshine brings feelings of hope after a dark year.

The Spring Equinox is a holiday known as Ostara (among other names) and is the origin of many Easter traditions. Even the name itself actually comes from a goddess of fertility.

Have you ever wondered what eggs and bunnies have to do with Jesus rising from the dead? Well you’re not alone. The symbols of Easter have much more to do with fertility than the Christian resurrection, but both represent the triumph of life over death and light over dark. The eggs are an obvious sign of fertility and represent the possibility of new life. Similarly, the Easter Bunny is another symbol of fertility due to rabbits' reputation of quick reproduction.

Regardless, the holiday represents new life, new beginnings, and the fearless courage of youth. The energy is all about doing and taking action before the thoughts of self-doubt have a chance to creep in. It is the time of planting seeds, both literally and figuratively. Ask yourself, what new ideas am I ready to try out?

It’s the perfect time to do something that scares you. To have confidence in yourself and trust that your desires are meant for you.

Aries is the first fire sign, which represents igniting a passion and taking initiative. It is the spark that lights the fire in your belly, the spirit, and the drive that turns dreams into reality.

To make the most of this energy, do something that scares you, something that makes you feel alive, something you have always wanted to do but told yourself plenty of “reasons” why you shouldn’t. Experiment and try something new. You may be surprised at what you find.
